Women’s Handicraft Workshop

The Mkonoo Women’s Network have been creating traditional Maasai beaded jewellery and leather bags in their village for years. The beaded jewellery has been for sale in the village and at the local market. Customers have been tourists and proceeds go to support the women’s daily lives in the village. Maasai Leather Bags have been for sale in the village of Coconut Grove in Miami, Florida. Terrawatu is now seeking funds to build a workshop for the women of Mkonoo. This will enable the women to properly store materials and work in a more sanitary environment. $12,000 will complete the workshop and enable the women to increase their production of handicrafts to meet the growing demand in both the local and international marketplace.

Terrawatu Internet Café / IT Centre

Located just outside the main Arusha town area in Mianzini, the Terrawatu Internet Café / IT Centre has employed dozens of local youth, mainly women, and has trained hundreds of students now employed in companies that seek workers with IT skills. With a substantial grant from Google in 2013, this IT Centre was upgraded to become a hub of technology services. With a passport picture machine, new printer and digital camera the new business generated from these inputs allows the centre to cover its own electricity costs. The grant has also enabled Terrawatu to hold workshops at the IT Centre to advance the IT skills of schoolteachers who teach at the computer labs installed by Terrawatu.
